There’s not a minute to lose. The social emergency in which Brazil has been plunged for some time now is not stopping. Actually, it’s becoming more and more dreadful. The first victims, as you can imagine, are the children.
I’ve just read an article which made me speechless, angry and left me with a terrible feeling of powerlessness. It’s been 129 years since the emanation of the Lei Áurea, and what has changed since then? NOTHING.
I’ll tell you the story of this “golden law”. On the 13th May 1888, the daughter and heiress of the Emperor of Brazil Pedro II decided to end centuries of exploitation and harassment against thousands of human beings.
Dona Isabela d’Orléans-Braganza, princess of Brazil, was 42 years old when she abolished slavery from her country. Every year the population celebrates this act of bravery in all parts of the country, with feasts and festivals.
But now it seems that there’s nothing left to celebrate.
After almost 150 years, slavery is flourishing, getting stronger and taking on new forms. There are forms of exploitation in the countryside, there’s slavery for debts, human trafficking and child prostitution. In the rural areas, as well as in the cities, the infernal Moloch of modern slavery keeps killing the bodies and souls of many people.
Some days ago, in occasion of the National Conference of Bishops in Brazil, it has been confirmed that from 1995 to 2015, they freed 47.000 modern slaves in all parts of the country. Forty-seven thousand men, women and children who have been deprived of their freedom for years.
These data stop every attempt to change the situation. You think about all those persons and you ask yourself: what can I do? Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world, its cities are fortresses of the drug cartels, so WHAT CAN WE DO against all this?
Padre Renato has taught us that we can do a lot. For more than thirty years, he has been ceaselessly fighting to change things and give a future to street children, young people, single mothers and to those who got lost in the infernal maze of drug addiction.
The Casa do Menor is the only way out for many persons to escape from life conditions that we cannot even imagine. This is the reason why mine, yours, OUR help is so important.
If this project doesn’t have the necessary funds to go on, many children will remain prisoners of their abusers.
But how can we free these people from modern slavery?
Padre Renato is doing this with projects that give to young people the means through which they can build the life they dream of, teaching them to love themselves and to value their own talents.
Thanks to the support of many persons who believe in Padre Renato and in his work, Casa do Menor has grown and it now has ten venues, which have been built near the suburbs of the most violent cities in the country.
For years the Angelo Affinita Foundation has supported Padre Renato and the love revolution he’s leading in Brazil. With the contribution of businessmen and friends of the Foundation, Padre Renato’s care homes have developed and could host 15.000 children. So many small lives which have been saved from slavery and death.
This is what the Foundation has accomplished so far:
- Funding of professional courses for young people in the central venue of Miguel Couto (mechanics, computer class, carpenter, beautician and hairdresser)
- Computer classes in the venues of Fortaleza and Rosas dos Ventos
- Purchase of machines for the craft workshops of Fortaleza, where they produce handmade bags
- Building and maintenance of the new venue in Igarassu, the “Casa Angelo”
- Funding of the project “Operazione speranza”, which aims at preventing drug dependence and rehabilitates children and young drug addicts through educational and artistic activities in the Casa André in Tinguà .
If you are thinking that these are great results, you’re right. But if you believe that enough has been done, you’re wrong. Violence is increasing, as well as the market of child prostitution, the exploitation of young girls and the victims of drug abuse.
We cannot stop. Padre Renato needs YOUR HELP, and he needs it NOW.
You have the opportunity to do something incredible: fight slavery and save the lives of many innocent children, who can have a better future thanks to the Casa do Menor.
Angelo Affinita used to say: “A single person can make a difference”.
