Roger Federer won.
You’ve read this sentence on every newspaper, after the eighth victory of this great champion at Wimbledon. Federer has created a sensation in the history of tennis and he will certainly be remembered as one of the most talented players of this sport.
But I appreciate him even more for something that has nothing to do with tennis.
Something for which this champion doesn’t need to be “Federer the legend”, but simply Roger. A man who, when he was 22 years old, decided to found the Roger Federer Foundation and to change the lives of thousands of children in distress.
I want to tell you this story to make you understand that things are changing. That the companies which have decided to go beyond the mere profit to do good are increasing. And they are the future. Nowadays there are many positive examples of firms where philanthropy and impact investing coexist.
The Roger Federer Foundation is a very good example of this trend. It’s a foundation which supports educational projects for African children who live in extreme poverty, and for Swiss children who live on the margins of society.
This foundation does not do charity work, on the contrary it sustains the communities to help them become self-sufficient, by using local staff and by creating structures and projects which can have long term results, designed for the context in which they develop. An example?
Building a school in an African village is a good thing. But it will remain empty if you don’t build housings for the teachers who come from remote villages and you don’t feed the children. Each project must be designed for its own context.
Therefore, it’s not really a matter of investing more money in social issues, but of using them in the right way. This is the reason why everyone can invest in these projects. There’s no need for heroes to obtain great results, but one must have great projects and the desire to always do a good job.
I’ve recently read a very interesting article on Investing for global impact. It’s a report made by the Financial Times, in collaboration with the GIST (Global Impact Solutions Today) and with the support of the British Barclays Bank. The topic: the development of private foundations.
Data speak for themselves: foundations work and have the power to do great things to solve social emergencies. But there’s a fact that has made me even prouder, and that I want to share with you.
The best foundations in terms of quality of the projects, their practical implementation and the benefits both for the beneficiaries of the projects and their investors are private family foundations.
The main reason is that in family businesses coexist:
- SPECIFIC ACTING FOR THE GOOD OF THE PLANET
So, if you want to do something and change the lives of many people who suffer, but you don’t know where to start, I have the solution for you. You can not only make the world a better place, but you will also lead your business into the future, achieving results that you can’t even imagine.
How? By joining a group of persons who engage themselves every day to support educational, training and job counseling projects, mostly directed to children and young people, but also to adults who are living in extremely hard life conditions.
For years the Angelo Affinita Foundation has supported educational and training projects which have changed the lives of hundreds of people. Abandoned children, young persons who have served their sentence in juvenile halls, former drug addicts, women victims of sexual slaves trafficking.
Every given cent is invested in projects which put people and their capacity to get back on their feet at the heart of their action. This is the reason why the Foundation sustains projects which give to the needy ones the MEANS through which they can stand on their own feet.
If you believe in the value of education and work, and you think that charity does not lead anywhere, then you are in the right place. The Affinita Foundation needs persons like you to keep helping, TO DONATE A REAL HOPE to those who suffer and feel lonely.
Each and every person is important to start changing things. You don’t need to be a hero to do that. There’s a strong need for men and women who roll up their sleeves and commit themselves to make the world a better place. You do this every day for your business, your employees, your family and friends. I’m asking you to do this also for those who need everything.
For the children of the street on Brazil, for those of Scampia and Rione Sanità, for the drug addicts of the Cittadella Cielo in Frosinone, for the migrant women of the Cooperativa NewHope. I’m asking you to believe in them, and to give them the chance to take flight.
Angelo Affinita used to say: “A single person can make a difference”.
